Online Tunes, in Service to Africa (NY Times) ...The music business is known for supporting causes with events like the Live Aid and Live Earth concerts, which generate lots of money and publicity for a relatively short time. But on Monday (RED), a nonprofit organization that arranges for companies to contribute a share of profits on certain products to fight AIDS in Africa, is starting a digital music service for that purpose, and it plans to operate for the long haul.

(LA Times) ...Rhapsody America, the Web's top subscription-based music service, plans to open a digital download store today, becoming the latest company to challenge the dominance of Apple Inc.'s iTunes.

BitTorrent seed farmer found guilty, faces 10 years in jail (Ars) ...A jury has convicted EliteTorrents admin Daniel Dove of conspiracy and felony copyright infringement. Mid-Year Sales Report: Top Sellers, Market Share And More
(Billboard) ...At the mid-point of 2008, U.S. album sales stand at an 11% decline when compared to the same period a year ago. Though not as precipitous a drop as the one recorded in the first half of 2007 (15.1%), this year's first half tally is 204.6 million units, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Report: Label Revenue Outside Direct Music Sales Up 14% (DMW) ...U.K. record company revenues outside direct sales of music -- such as licensing, and other areas outside the recording copyright -- increased by 13.8% to $242 million in 2007, and now account for 11.4% of their domestic income, according to a report from the BPI, a record label trade group.
