THIS WEEK
When Genres Collide

Friday: MUDDY WATERS & THE BAND "Mannish Boy"
Recorded live on the stage during the performances of 'The Last Waltz', the roots-rock of The Band back blues legend Muddy Waters for a rendition of the quintessential blues song.

 Thursday:
Johnny Cash & Bob Dylan "Girl From North Country"
Originally written by Dylan in 1963, the two musical giants re-recorded it as duet in 1969 and it was then released on Dylan's album Nashville Skyline. The two pioneers of folk and country laid the groundwork of inspiration for most of today's singer-songwriters.

Wednesday: De La Soul & Teenage Fanclub  'Fallin'

The New York hip-hop group joined forces with the Scottish alt-rock band for the 1993 soundtrack for the film Judgement Night. With a sampled chorus from Tom Petty's 'Free Fallin', the track highlighted an album full of genre-colliders that is definitely worth checking out.

Tuesday: Blink 182 & Robert Smith (of The Cure)  'All of This'
Like it or not, as Blink drifted more into the emo realm from their punk roots in the later stages of the band, they collaborated with the man some consider the "godfather" of the genre.

Monday: Public Enemy & Anthrax  'Bring the Noise'

Like it or not, this collaboration helped pave the way for the "rapcore" genre that exploded onto the scene in the late 1990s.

                             DISCLAIMER
 Why we don't do reviews

Reading about someone listening to music is dumb.  The internet has made it possible for the listener to listen and experience the music for themselves before buying or downloading. Everyone has their own distinct musical ear that has been shaped and formed since they were a kid so we all have different definitions as to what constitutes “good music.”  There is no universal formula.  And who the f#!k are we to tell you if an album or a song is good or not.  Music is not black and white, it is as grey as grey can be.  When I listen to my Keith Sweat album sitting at my computer, staring into space, it doesn't do much for me...but, when I put it on and bump uglies with my lady, it takes on a whole new meaning. Who gives a s#!t  how many stars or what kind of a rating someone else gives it.  Experience music for yourself. Sure, use the music sites (and this one in particular) as navigational beacons pointing you in the direction of new and classic music, but reading about someone describing sound is ridiculous.  Hear it for yourself.  Peace.

The Music Diary: May 16, 2000

The Artist Formerly Known As Prince announces that he will start using his name again. The singer says the reason for switching back is because his publishing contract with Warner/Chappell, made under the name Prince, expired at the end of 1999. "I will now go back to using my name instead of the symbol I adopted as a means to free myself from all undesirable relationships," he says.
